A SUMMARY OF THE BOOK: THE LADY OF THE HOUSE is the story of Jessica Rae Turner, a thirty-year-old divorcee with two small children, struggling to make ends meet and keep her family together, as she slowly falls in love with her next-door neighbor, Donald Henderson. Employed by a maid service company at the home of a young couple in an expensive Cincinnati suburb, Jessica finds herself the victim of a kidnapping, when, in a case of mistaken identity, she is forced to choose between herself and her wealthy employer and friend, Linda McKane. Her choice made, with no regrets, she struggles with her captors to survive the long wait for the ransom. Hidden away in a vacant farmhouse in the southern Ohio countryside, she fantasizes about the good and the bad things in her past, her hopes and fears, her children, and Donald. Though treated differently by each of her young captors, she suffers physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, and is routinely isolated in a cold, dark fruit cellar, where in the darkness and quiet she is consumed with introspection and self-doubt. How will her children turn out if she is not there for them? How much will John and Linda McKane help? Why had it taken her so long to decide that she loved Donald Henderson? After several failed escape attempts and one foiled plan to murder one of her captors, her ordeal ends with a daring act of heroism by Donald, as the FBI looks on.
